2009 Mt Jackson, Pierce, & Eisenhower NH Hike

October 25, 2009 hike with Joan & Ryan from Crawford Notch's AMC Highland Center. Started hike with Mt Jackson (4052 ft) via Saco Lake Tr to Webster-Jackson Tr to summit. Winds were howling and summit was socked in with fog and clouds. From Jackson we proceeded to Mt Pierce (4312 ft) via the Webster Cliff Trail. After a nice and easy long traverse with a short up we came to what will now be known as the false summit of Pierce. Taking pictures and rejoicing in our easy victory of Pierce we proceeded to the real summit which was hidden in the clouds. As we were about to leave Pierce the fog and clouds started to break up right before our eyes and Mt Eisenhower came into view. As if renewed by the sudden appearance of the sun we silently agreed to besiege Mt Eisenhower (4760 ft) with vigor via the Crawford Path to Eisenhower Loop. While crossing the exposed ridge to Eisenhower we began to be buffeted by the 50+ mph winds with higher gusts giving us a taste of what the summit will be like and why this ridge is exposed. Reaching the summit of Eisenhower we are rewarded with fierce winds and some of the most spectacular south facing views we've seen in the Whites. Difficult to keep the camera steady while exposed to the wind but we managed to get a couple shots in before retreating to a more sheltered location on the south face for a lunch break. After a short lunch break we descended the famous Crawford Path all the way to our origin, the Highland Center, enjoying the sun, warmer temperatures, and amazing Kelly green moss everywhere on the oldest continuously maintained footpath in America, the first section, Highland Center to Mt Pierce was cut in 1819. What a great day, 11.3 miles and over 3347 feet of elevation gain in a total time of 7:08!

2009 Camel's Hump VT Hike

November 15, 2009 hike with Joan, Mike, & Ryan via Monroe Trail to Dean Trail to Long Trail to summit of Camel's Hump (4083 ft) then down north side continuing on the Long Trail to Monroe Trail all the way back to the summer & fall parking lot. Camel's Hump is Vermont's third-highest mountain and highest undeveloped one. Part of the Green Mountain range, it is one of the oldest mountains on Earth! We had a surprisingly warm day with highs in the 50’s and summit temps around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. A very heavy moister overcast day with occasional drizzle. Just before we got to the top of Dean’s Trail you get a great shot of a large cliff, yup, you guessed it, as soon as you turn onto the Long Trail, you go straight up the side of that cliff. You get to scramble through some very interesting rock formations on the way to the summit and then another steep rocky climb to the summit of Camel’s Hump. When we arrived at the summit, we were met with light winds and heavy cloud cover so visibility was not great. After a brief rest bit and the consumption of lunch some interesting things started to happen with the fog and clouds as some sun made an appearance. We descended once again into the clouds and fog as we got back onto the Monroe Trail but still quite a nice return route as the terrain was mild compared to the Long Trail. All in all, another great hike thanks to Joan, Mike, and a little cooperation from the weather.
